A typing test is a snapshot of how you type right now. To learn touch typing itself, the trainer starts on the home row with J and K and adds new keys step by step.
How the test works
- Put your fingers on the home row: left hand on A S D F, right hand on J K L ;.
- Type the words on the screen for one minute.
- When the minute is up, you see your words per minute and your accuracy.
- To get better, practice in the trainer, starting with J and K.
How your result is calculated
Words per minute is the number of correct characters you typed, divided by five, per minute. Five characters count as one word. Accuracy shows how many of your keystrokes were correct, shown as a percentage. Accuracy counts every wrong key, even ones you fix. Your result covers one minute on one day, so give it another go on a different day before you read much into it.
Typing test or touch typing?
People often search for a "typing test" when they want to type better. A test and touch typing are two sides of the same thing. A test measures how you type. Touch typing is the skill itself: each finger has its own keys, your hands start on the home row, and your eyes stay on the screen.
The TypeEasily trainer teaches that skill in 34 steps. Step 1 is J and K. From there it adds keys step by step, moves on to real English words, and ends with sentences and adaptive practice.
Before you start
Sit up straight with your elbows close to your sides. Left hand on A S D F, right hand on J K L ;. Find the small bumps on F and J without looking, and keep your eyes on the screen.
