Learn touch typing with the ten-finger method

TypeEasily is a free in-browser touch-typing trainer. The homepage is the trainer. Open it and type. There is no website login and no user database. Progress stays in this browser on this device.

What is touch typing?

Touch typing means you write by muscle memory. Your eyes stay on the screen — on the words you are producing, or on the drill in front of you — not on the lettering of each key. You are not searching for the next letter with one or two fingers. You return to a rest position and reach from there.

Speed comes later. A beginner who slams keys while watching their hands is still hunting. A slower, accurate pass with eyes on the screen is closer to touch typing.

The ten-finger method

The ten-finger method — ten-finger typing — gives each finger a set of keys. The home row is the rest position for a standard keyboard. Left hand on A S D F. Right hand on J K L ;. The index fingers sit on F and J. Those two keys have small bumps so you can find them without looking.

Every other key is a reach from that row. If F and J are fuzzy, the rest of the keyboard stays fuzzy. TypeEasily follows that order: home row first, then two keys at a time.

How TypeEasily trains you

Open typeeasily.com. You are in the trainer. There is no separate classroom site and no account wall. The first screen is Step 1 of 34, stage Home row, lesson J and K, goal 90% · 8 wpm.

From there the course adds keys two at a time. You can jump forward or back whenever you like. There is an optional game mode over the same method. Progress stays in this browser on this device — not in a user database. There is no website login.

Keyboard layouts

TypeEasily is for English users. You can pick a US, UK, or Danish layout. Match the layout in the app to the layout in your operating system. An on-screen keyboard stays with the drill as a finger guide: look at the screen, not your fingers.

Trainer vs typing test

A typing test takes a snapshot: how fast and how accurately you type a passage right now. It does not teach which finger owns which key. A trainer does the opposite: home row first, small steps, until the motion sits. TypeEasily is a trainer, not a test.

People often arrive after trying another in-browser tutor. Those pages are qualitative, not a ranking: Keybr alternative, Typing.com alternative, TypingClub alternative.
